Caltech’s ePetri dish uses Android, not microscope | CNET News

What do you get when you combine an Android smartphone, cell phone image sensor, Lego building blocks, and a handful of Caltech engineers and biologists? The ePetri, which isn’t Petri Dish 2.0, but a full reworking of a technology that dates back to the late 1800s.

Irvine, CA-based startup Drumbi is today launching its new iPhone and Android app that wants to revolutionize the phone call. With Drumbi you’re now able to specify the topic of a phone call, as well as the location from which you’re calling before you place it. You can also designate the urgency of your call, so that when the recipient answers they’re well aware of the context and other relevant information you would have had to explain anyway. (via Drumbi: Reinventing phone calls by giving them a subject line - TNW Apps)

I like the notion of contextualizing phone calls with metadata, and tying that to the life stream.

The Android Explosion: How Google’s Freewheeling Ecosytem Threatens the iPhone

Rubin had created a slick operating system for mobile phones that allowed customers to surf the web, send email, play music, and install apps. He had hoped that Google’s money and power would help turn Android into a major force in the burgeoning smartphone industry. Instead, Android had been a disappointment. Despite months of press buildup, the first phone to run the system, HTC’s T-Mobile G1, was greeted with tepid reviews and lackluster sales………………

CHART OF THE DAY: Android Blows Past iPhone — Even If You Include iPod Touch

Google Android has come out of nowhere in the last couple of years to kick Apple’s butt in smartphone market share.

Paul Higgins: I have always had a problem with the Apple way of doing things and the level of control they wish to have. I understand why - they want to minimise problems on the hardware to maximise the user experience. However I always thought that a system that allowed more freedom both in hardware and software innovation would win out with the two co-existing in the end but me preferring non Apple and that result being reflected across the total market place. Having said all that have just got an iPad 2 and love it. Just goes to prove this is not a winner take all  situation.
